DIBOLL — Zach Phipps had a huge game on both sides of the ball as the Diboll Lumberjacks opened district play with a hard-fought 21-14 win over the Woodville Eagles here Friday night.
Phipps came up with three interceptions on the defensive side and scored two of Diboll’s three touchdowns in the win.
Phipps came up with a big defensive play for the ’Jacks early on when he had an interception that ended a 68-yard drive.
However, after a Diboll punt, the Eagles scored on a 6-yard touchdown run from Ralon Williams that made it 7-0.
After the teams exchanged punts, Phipps delivered the big play on the offensive side as his 59-yard touchdown catch from Haydn Harris tied the game at 7-7.
The ’Jacks took the lead on another big play that included the same duo — with Harris hitting Phipps for a 53-yard score — making the score 14-7.
Woodville answered with a 17-play drive with Williams hitting Darius Bean on an 8-yard score on the last play of the half, tying the game at 14-14.
It was all punts in the third quarter before Diboll got rolling once again in the final eight minutes with an interception.
Diboll’s Izaac DeJesus recovered a fumble that allowed Diboll to set up the game-winning score with Latavian Forney scoring on a 2-yard run.
With Woodville driving for a potential tying score, Phipps got his final interception to appropriately seal the Diboll win.
The ’Jacks (3-2, 1-0) return to action on Friday when they play at Palestine Westwood.
